Quotes

Now my big ballooned boobs are back.
They inflate, my belly deflates,
It’s all a ballooning cycle.
And the deep cry is real, real deep,
And that fabric over my face feels real, real soft.

When looking at the work of Adama C. Turay, which I do often, having collected and lived with her work for some time now, one has the sense that but for a lack of time, there would be a ton of it. Dreamlike bordering on nightmarish, to me, the works describe an insatiable appetite for the love-bond between mother and offspring.

Does contemporary art culture ever talk about the thin line of identity between the maternal being and the being that came out of her?

This second issue of MILKED aims to reveal a narrative of “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young [Mother]”. There are so many layers to that notion. The artists of this issue, all mothers themselves, explore identity, environment, and the dissection of maternal material. They don’t shy away from rage and ambiguity, references to religion, isolation, or a debate on the very notion of “self-portrait” in and of itself. This issue contrasts the familiar with the lesser shown, and objects act as layered depictions of personality.
